As we continued in worship, we were told that this song's author, Louisa Stead, is thought to have written these words after watching her husband drown, trying to save a little boy. Life is just hard sometimes. People walk out, give up on marriages. Parents fail to be adults. People get sick, really sick. Children die. Loved ones die. People hurt us and let us down. Families lose their homes. People lose their jobs. Evil abounds.
BUT God ... some of the sweetest words in the world. But God is still God. God is still good. He can still be trusted. In Mended, the study I'm doing right now, Angie Smith, when hearing that the baby in her womb, would not live, said, with assurance, "He's no different. It's ok. He's no different ..." In the face of one of her hardest moments, she chose to stand on the truth that God was the same as He was the hour before when there was nothing but anticipation of that baby in her womb.
So, the sweetness of trusting God in the words of this beloved hymn takes on new meaning knowing that it was born, not out of abundance, but out of need, heartbreaking, desperate need.
Those are the times that we need to take Him at His word more than any other. I think that's why His word is there ... to help us navigate those times when we, maybe don't see his face as clearly. I am on a new journey to take God at His word in ways I've never done. It's scary and exciting at the same time. It makes so sense and feels like one of the most foolish things I've done. Foolish and faith-filled, all at the same time. Nothing sweeter than to see our God show out in ways that only He can do when His people trust Him to be God!
’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take Him at His Word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
And to know, “Thus saith the Lord!”
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er;
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
Oh, for grace to trust Him more!
