Memorial Day ...

has a whole new meaning to me this year with Granddad's funeral still so fresh on my heart.

I've always known how proud Granddad was of his service in the Army during WWII and of his years as a fireman with the LRFD ... but seeing the honor bestowed on him by both the military and the fire department at his funeral was such a moving tribute ... one I wish he had seen for himself.

There is still lots to think about and write about from the last week, but for now, I just want to remember the words of the serviceman who presented the flag that so proudly draped Granddad's casket, "on behalf of a grateful nation in honor of your Father's service ..."

So grateful for those who serve and have served.

Today, I pay a little more attention now to the details of life ... the flags that circle the cemetary down from my house, the red, white, and blue arrangements on the store shelves, and the meaning of this day ... to remember those who have served this country well.

"Their lives remind us that freedom is not bought cheaply. It has a cost; it imposes a burden. And just as they whom we commemorate were willing to sacrifice, so too must we -- in a less final, less heroic way -- be willing to give of ourselves." (Reagan, Memorial Day 1982)
