This week in the Lion Chaser book, we were considering the Butterfly Effect. Technically it's a part of Chaos Theory that says "Tiny differences in input [can] quickly become overwhelming differences in output." Basically it's the idea that something as little as the beating of a butterfly's wings can have vast consequences in weather patterns even hundreds of miles away. It serves as the premise of all of those movies that use time travel to fix their problems. And its a good reminder that we don't have to do BIG things every day with our lives to make a big difference. The impact of small things ... especially small things, done over time, that can add up to some major influence.
For instance, the small time I spend in the word each morning can influence my day in major ways.
Taking the time to be kind to someone can change the course of their day ... and sometimes even the course of their life.
A few minutes to send a card can change someone's outlook.
Taking the time to listen to a friend can alter their outcome.
Sometimes I get bogged down in having enough time to do what I want to do and forget to do anything. I'm trying to slow down, take the time to find the small things I KNOW I can do and do them ... stopping what I am doing when a student comes into my office, sending a card, returning an email, writing on a facebook wall, listening to what is "not" being said, walking to campus ...
Small changes and small choices magnified over time can have MAJOR consequences.
