Brave Day #4: new things

Well, do the words, it'll grow have meaning to anyone else?  Pretty sure my brother uttered those to me ... ONCE.

My hair was driving me insane ... needed a trim, badly.  But I didn't plan ahead to get my normal hairstylist-woman.  But, I mean, my haircut is not complicated ... so I went with the person with the opening, staring at her cosmetology license as she cut.  My mistake perhaps was saying ... I'd like more body, maybe some long layers??

And when she dried my hair and spun me around, my first words were (no lie) ... I look like I have a mullet.

In actuality, it's not THAT bad ... and I can tuck it behind my ears, but it was NOT what I had in mind!  And then I felt kind of bad ... because it was obvious that I was a bit freaked out with the much shorter layers around my face.  But then as I was giving her a generous tip to let her know I didn't hate her, it occurred to me that we can't just always play it safe or we might just miss out one something new that we'd love.  I MIGHT even love this new hairdo ... maybe.  If I'd never tried mountain biking, I'd never have known how much I'd enjoy it.  If I'd never tried running, I'd not have this love-hate relationship with it.  If I'd never tried guacamole, I'd have missed out on something really yummy.  If I'd not taken a risk on some friendships, I'd have missed out on so much.  I love trying new recipes (even if I don't use them ever again), love reading new books, meeting new people ...

Some of you are well acquainted with the Gavin cheese pizza story.  If you're not, that's a long story for another day, but the gyst of it is that if you like things the way you are, you might like something different, but you might not, so better to just stick with what you KNOW you like.  I don't hold to that view of life.  I've had to take too many risks and found too many blessings in doing so to believe that playing it safe is always usually the best way to go!

Back in my Garth days (another thing that I woulda missed out on if I hadn't tried something new ... pretty sure Gavin convinced me to buy the box set), there was a song that really got at the heart of being willing to take risks.  It's called, How You Ever Gonna Know and it says:

That old wind that's whippin' out there
It's whistlin' your tune
That wind blew pyramids to Egypt
and footprints to the moon
And that old star that you've been wishin' on
Is shining mighty bright
It's a fire inside your heart
That's gonna lead you to the light

How you ever gonna know,
What's it like to live there?
How you ever gonna know, victory?
How you ever gonna know,
What it's like when dreams become reality?
How you ever gonna know,
How it feels to hold it?
How you ever gonna know, what it's like to dance?
How you ever gonna know,
If you never take the chance?

You know failure isn't failure
If a lesson from it's learned
I guess love would not be love
Without a risk of being burned
Anything in life worth havin'
Lord, it has its sacrifice
But the gift that you're receiving
Is worth more than the price

How you ever gonna know,
What's it like to live there?
How you ever gonna know,
What you never know?
How you ever gonna know,
If you're down here doin'
what the good lord puts you here to do?
How you ever gonna know,
If you could have done it?
How you ever gonna know, How it feels to fly?
How you ever gonna know,
If you never dare to try?

Listen not to the critics,
Who put their own dreams on the shelf
If you wanna get the truth to admit it,
You've gotta find out for yourself

How you ever gonna know,
What it's like to be there?
How you ever gonna know,
If you're the best?
How you ever gonna know,
What you believe in if you don't put it to the test?
How you ever gonna know,
How it feels to hold it?
How you ever gonna know,
What'll never change it?
How you ever gonna know,
If you never chase the dream?

How you ever gonna know,
Your potential?
How you ever gonna know, How you ever gonna know,
What's it like when dreams become reality?
How you ever gonna know,
How it feels to hold her?
How you ever gonna know,
What it's like to dance?
How you ever gonna know,
If you never take the chance?

So, part of being brave is being willing to take risks.  And taking risks inherantly means that we are not guaranteed an outcome, could be worse than we imagined or better than we could even dream.  I don't want to miss out on what life has to offer because I am too afraid or too stuck in my routines to see what else is around me.  I might even grow to like these "long layers"-pseudomullet hairstyle I'm sporting!
